Kinshasa, October 1st, 2025 (CPA).-The European Union will not allow Russia to sow ‘division and anxiety in our societies,’ the Commission President has said on Wednesday at the opening of a summit of heads of state and government in Copenhagen, Denmark, according to international media reports. ‘We have had drones in Poland, we have had an incursion into Estonian airspace, Russia is seeking to test us, but also to sow division and anxiety in our societies. We will not let that happen,’ has said Ursula von der Leyen. For her part, the Danish Prime Minister called for a ‘very strong response’ from Europe to the ‘hybrid war’ being waged by Russia. ‘There is only one country that is prepared to threaten us, and that is Russia, so we need a very strong response,’ has said Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark. ‘I hope that everyone now recognises that there is a hybrid war. One day it’s in Poland, another day it’s in Denmark, and next week it will probably be somewhere else that we will see sabotage or drones flying,’ has added the Danish leader, whose country has been flown over several times by unidentified drones in recent days. She believes that Europe is currently facing its most difficult and dangerous situation since the end of the Second World War, and has called on Europeans to rearm and innovate in the field of defence. As a reminder, recent reports of drones across Denmark have led to the closure of several airports, including Copenhagen, the largest in Northern Europe. Their origin remains unknown, but the Danish authorities have blamed Russia, which has already been accused of being behind the intrusion of around 20 drones into Polish airspace in early September and three fighter jets into Estonian airspace a few days later.
‘Europe is in confrontation with Russia,’ according to Macron
For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron has said upon his arrival in Denmark, « We are in confrontation with Russia. For several years, Russia has been a very aggressive player in our information space. We saw this in the context of the elections (…) It is a player that is stepping up its cyber-attacks. It has, of course, launched a war of aggression in Ukraine, it is using the nuclear threat and, as we can clearly see today, it is provoking incidents in airspace. All of this is a hybrid space that is in the field of confrontation, » has explained the French President. As a reminder, the leaders of the 27 EU countries are meeting in Copenhagen on Wednesday for an informal summit mainly devoted to defence issues.
