Tshopo: MSF strengthens its health response after major humanitarian emergencies in 2025

Kisangani, January 28th, 2026 (CPA).- The international organization Doctors Without Borders has announced on Wednesday the strengthening and continuation of its health interventions in 2026 in the provinces that were formerly part of Orientale Province, after a year marked by humanitarian emergencies of exceptional magnitude in 2025, during a press conference held for this purpose in Kisangani, the principal city of Tshopo, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo.  “Our priority remains the response to emergencies and the support of the most vulnerable populations. In 2026, MSF intends to consolidate its presence and strengthen the collaboration with the health authorities and local communities,” has declared Nicolas Guiral, MSF Switzerland Kisangani project coordinator.

According to him, the humanitarian organization will continue its work in the provinces of Tshopo, Ituri, Bas-Uélé, and Haut-Uélé, with a particular focus on the care of refugees from the Central African Republic, the fight against cholera, and the identification of new health zones to support. He has also called on donors to maintain their support in a context of reduced humanitarian funding. In terms of health, the interventions have been dominated by the response to cholera and meningitis, particularly in Tshopo province. “More than 4,000 people with cholera have been treated and more than 18,000 people vaccinated in displacement sites,” has specified Mr. Guiral, adding that the teams have also supported the taking care of suspected cases of meningitis in Banalia. Looking back on 2025, described as an atypical year, MSF has indicated that the succession of health crises and mass population displacements have far exceeded initial projections. The Kisangani Emergency Response (KERE) mechanism, designed for short-term interventions, has therefore been extended on an exceptional basis, allowing new areas to be explored and the Adi site to be opened. MSF has finally reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the synergy with political, administrative, health, and religious authorities in order to guarantee sustainable access to healthcare for populations affected by humanitarian crises.
