Kinshasa, September 21st, 2025 (CPA).- The Estonian government has announced on Sunday that an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council would be held at its request on Monday, following the incursion of three Russian aircraft into its airspace, according to international media reports.
‘On September 22nd, the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting in response to Russia’s flagrant violation of Estonian airspace last Friday,’ has declared Margus Tsahkna, Estonian Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs. « This behaviour requires an international response. The Russia’s conduct is incompatible with the responsibilities of a permanent member of the UN Security Council, » he has added.
According to the same sources, this is the first time in Estonia’s 34 years of UN membership that this EU and NATO member country has officially requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council. For the Estonian minister in charge of Foreign Affairs, this violation is part of a ‘broader pattern of behaviour’ by Russia, aimed at testing the resolve of Europe and NATO. In addition, the Estonian Prime Minister has announced last Friday that his country would ask NATO to activate Article 4 of the Atlantic Treaty, which provides for consultations between allies in the event of a threat to one of its members.
Ten days ago, around 20 Russian drones have entered Polish airspace, and shortly afterwards a Russian combat drone has remained in Romanian airspace for an hour. Estonia and NATO had warned last Friday that three MiG-31 fighter jets from the Russian Federation have entered Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland and have remained there for about 12 minutes. Italy, which is responsible for policing the Baltic skies within NATO, as well as Sweden and Finland, has scrambled aircraft to intercept the three intruders.
