Kinshasa, January 22nd, 2026 (CPA).- The US envoy Steve Witkoff has indicated on Thursday that negotiations aiming to end nearly four years of fighting in Ukraine have ‘made significant progress’ and that only one issue remains to be resolved, have reported in the international media. ‘I think there is only one issue left to resolve. We have discussed several versions of this issue, which means it can be resolved. So, if both sides want to resolve it, we will resolve it,’ has declared Steve Witkoff, the US envoy. Steve Witkoff had stated the day before that the Russian side had requested this new meeting. The US negotiators will then travel to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where discussions will continue in ‘military-to-military’ working groups, the US envoy has specified. The American emissaries are negotiating separately with Kiev and Moscow for months on an agreement to end nearly four years of fighting, but several issues remain unresolved, including those of occupied territories and security guarantees for Ukraine. Kiev wants to obtain clear guarantees from its Western allies on its security after a hypothetical ceasefire. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had already met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow in early December to present proposals aimed to find a solution to the conflict initiated by Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukraine in February 2022.
