North Kivu: call for awareness against demonstrations hostile to MONUSCO

Beni, April 12th, 2021 (CPA).- The interim mayor of Beni, Modeste Bakwanamaha, requested the solidarity of all the leaders of the various structures of civil society in South Kivu for the sensitization of demonstrators and other sensitivities hostile to the presence of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) on the soil of this jurisdiction. Mr. Bakwanamaha brought together on this issue, notables, organizations and components of civil society as well as religious denominations to try to defuse the crisis of confidence between his constituents and the UN mission. These agitations further dehumanize populations as well as displaced people who have found refuge in Beni with serious socio-economic consequences, he said. He reminded his hosts of the role of MONUSCO and its mission in a war zone by indicating that only the central government can ask this mission to leave an environment after in-depth studies on the seriousness or not of the security state.

Condemnation of recorded skids

The participants in this meeting unanimously condemned the excesses of the demonstrators and the police force which led to the murder last Friday of a breastfeeding woman in the market of Mupanda as well as the torture and injuries recorded. They recommended that the demonstrators reorient their demands towards the useful target, to let the population go about their business freely, to spare the pupils and students so as not to fall into autoflagellation.
