30 police officers installed at the University of Kinshasa to reinforce security

Kinshasa, November 2nd, 2025 (CPA).- Thirty (30) police officers have been stationed at the University of Kinshasa (Unikin) in the Democratic Republic of Congo to reinforce and support the university police in securing the campus,  on Sunday according to administrative sources. ‘We have decided to install thirty members of the Lemba Centre police force at the University of Kinshasa to work in collaboration with those at Unikin, with the aim of reinforcing and supporting the university police in securing the site, following several incidents, in order to eradicate any kind of threat,’ has declared Jean Serge Poba, burgomaster of the municipality of Lemba. « Given that the University of Kinshasa site is often threatened with sinking into a cycle of violence following the resurgence of crime in the surrounding area, the thirty police officers installed are intended to support the university police. Their tasks will be to patrol together, occupy sensitive areas and impose mandatory routine checks on access to the university site, which is closed between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., in order to eradicate these threats, » he has added. The burgomaster of Lemba has specified that this decision has been taken by the local security committee during a working session. « Given the necessity and urgency of implementing this recommendation, a law enforcement requisition number 0222/2025 had already been issued and duly signed by the municipal authority on September 5th, 2025. This decision has been taken by the local security committee during a working session, » he has said. For his part, Jean Marie Kayembe, rector of the University of Kinshasa (Unikin), has agreed that the joint PNC-PUK patrols will be re-launched on Monday November 3rd, 2025, with the addition of thirty members of the Congolese National Police, under the direct supervision of the University of Kinshasa authorities and the territorial heads of the National Police, PNC, ANR, DGM and T2 branches of the 14th military region, after meeting with the security committee in his office. « The University of Kinshasa is frequented by many residents. We have had several discussions with the rector and the authorities regarding the security situation, which is not satisfactory, as the guards on duty do not really have the equipment to apprehend the bandits every time they come to carry out their crimes. But with our team in place, we will be able to put an end to certain threats, » has moreover declared Bela, commander of the Lemba Centre police station.
