Kisangani, February 3rd, 2026 (CPA).- A plea is being made by the senator Jean Bamanisa for the complete rehabilitation of the dilapidated infrastructure of the hydroelectric power plant Tshopo 1 and 2 in Kisangani, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a document consulted on Tuesday by CPA.
‘You can continue to count on our determination to see through this project for the complete rehabilitation of the Tshopo 1 power station and the construction of Tshopo 2 by maintaining constant pressure on the government and the National Electricity Company (Snel) so that sustainable solutions for the benefit of the entire population are finally implemented,’ has declared the senator Jean Bamanisa Saidi. According to him, the gradual deterioration of equipment, particularly the turbine generators, underground cables and several transformers, is the cause of the recurring power cuts observed in the city, affecting households as well as small and medium-sized local industries.
Senator Bamanisa believes that the ad hoc repairs carried out in recent years have not ensured a stable and reliable energy supply, calling instead for a comprehensive replacement of the facilities and a complete modernisation of the distribution network. He has also mentioned the need for better coordination between the government and the National Electricity Company (Snel), criticising the proliferation of projects and announcements without an overall plan.
In his view, this is delaying the implementation of sustainable solutions. The son of Tshopo finally called on the people of Kisangani to remain calm and vigilant, while reaffirming his determination to pursue institutional steps to secure the rehabilitation of the power station Tshopo 1 and the construction of Tshopo 2 to improve the city’s energy supply.
