Congolese rumba: Tabu Ley’s repertoire estimated at around 400 musical works

Kinshasa, September 27th, 2026 (CPA).- Documentary findings from the National Commission for the Promotion of Rumba in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have reignited the debate over the number of works attributed to the late Congolese singer Tabu Ley Rochereau, estimated at around 400, CPA learned Sunday from an administrative source. “The documentary research available to us puts Tabu Ley’s repertoire at around 400 musical works, with a margin of error of 10% (his actual repertoire would therefore be somewhere between 360 and 440 songs). At this stage, the figure of 2,000 works often repeated in public opinion appears difficult to reconcile with the historical and documentary evidence available,” said Herman Bangui, Vice-President of the National Commission for the Promotion of Congolese Rumba.

He stressed the need to cross-reference different sources in order to compile an inventory of songs composed by Congolese artists and establish a national repertoire. “We spent six months working with the team that prepared the 10th anniversary of the death of Seigneur Ley, together with his son-in-law, Jean-Claude Muissa, who had also published a special magazine listing the musical works of the head of Afrisa International. The number given in that publication is very similar to the one included in the tribute we paid to this legendary figure of Congolese rumba in Rétro magazine,” he said.

According to him, this clarification paves the way for a possible official review aimed at establishing, on the basis of the most rigorous documentation possible, the number of works actually attributable to this major figure of Congolese music.

“The National Commission for the Promotion of Congolese Rumba and the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage could, in this regard, cross-check the various available sources and consider making any necessary corrections to public commemorative materials devoted to the artist, particularly at his burial site at the ‘Entre terre et ciel’ (Etec) necropolis,” he said. The analyst stressed that this initiative in no way seeks to diminish Pascal Tabu Ley Rochereau’s contribution to Congolese music. “Rather, it seeks to contribute to preserving his artistic memory by correcting any inaccuracies that may become embedded in the historical narrative,” he concluded.

For the promoters of this clarification, the objective is to ensure that the historical record devoted to major artists corresponds to the best-established historical data, in order to preserve Tabu Ley Rochereau’s musical legacy over the long term.
