Kinshasa, July 20th, 2025 (CPA). –The Central Bank of Congo (BCC) key interest rate was maintained at 25% on Friday by the Monetary Policy Committee of the issuing institution, following a meeting chaired by the governor of this financial institution in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a statement consulted by the CPA on Saturday.
« The Monetary Policy Committee has renewed its commitment to a cautious monetary policy. In this context, the BCC’s key interest rate is maintained at 25% and the reserve requirement ratios on sight and term deposits in national currencies remain unchanged at 12% and 0%; those applied to sight and term deposits in foreign currencies remain at 13% and 12%, respectively, » according to the BCC document. According to the source, the Monetary Policy Committee noted the strengthening of macroeconomic stability observed since June 2024. It attributed this stability to the impact of a prudent monetary policy and government measures to reduce the cost of living, as well as the benefits of exchange rate stability in recent months. ‘The Monetary Policy Committee noted the strengthening of macroeconomic stability observed since the second half of 2024. Thus, the year-on-year inflation rate stood at 8.4% at the end of June 2025, compared to 20.7% in the same period of 2024,’ the source reported. In the first half of 2025, the Congolese franc depreciated by 0.9% on the interbank market and 0.2% on the parallel market, compared with a 6% decline on both market segments in the corresponding period of 2024.
The Monetary Policy Committee has promised to continue to closely monitor internal and external economic developments and related risk factors. It will take any corrective measures that may be necessary to consolidate the stability of the macroeconomic framework. The Committee’s next regular meeting is scheduled for October 14th, 2025. The key interest rate is the overnight interest rate set by the central bank of a country or monetary union, which allows it to regulate economic activity. It is the interest rate at which commercial banks refinance or borrow from the central bank. ACP/
