DRC Football: ‘I am not interested in becoming president of Fecofa’ (Honorary Minister in charge of Sport)

Kinshasa, March 3rd, 2026 (CPA).- An honorary Minister in charge of Sports of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has said non-starter, for the candidacy of the presidency of the Congolese Football Association (Fecofa), on Tuesday, during an interview, in view of the Extraordinary Elective General Assembly of April 11th. ‘I am non-starter as a candidate to be president of the Congolese Football Association (Fecofa), ahead of its Extraordinary Elective General Assembly (AGEE), scheduled for April 11th, 2026,’ has declared François Claude Kabulo, Honorary Minister in charge of Sports and Leisure of DRC. Reached by telephone, on Tuesday, on this subject, the source has explained it as follows. ‘To date, I have never been driven by the ambition to run for any mandate or any position on the next Executive Committee of the technical body of national football in DRC. And I am surprised that my name is making headlines in this regard on social media,’ he has explained, adding: ‘On this subject, I haven’t stopped receiving calls from Kinshasa, from all over the country and even from beyond the national borders, such as from Abidjan in Ivory Coast, asking me to confirm my candidacy for the position of president of Fecofa.’ In the current circumstances prevailing in the country, Claude François has specified, a good election should be consensual, in the manner of the 2002 Sun City Agreement in South Africa, which has brought everyone around a table. ‘I reserve myself from applying for fear of taking responsibility for any failure at Fecofa’. As far as I know, there will be many candidates at Fecofa and it will be very difficult to find the right person, in the right place, capable of steering this national sports institution to a safe harbour. The aim being to revive football in DRC, there is a risk to elect candidates who’s the profile do not match the required profiles, has concluded Claude François Kabulo. To date, many names are making headlines in the local media and on the social networks, on an unofficial basis, as candidates for the various positions on the next Fecofa Executive Committee. As a reminder, Claude François Kabulo is a renowned sports journalist and former Minister in charge of Sports and Leisure of DRC, in office from March 2023 to June 2024, who’s the name, is well known in sports environments in DRC.
