Kinshasa, October 6th, 2026 (CPA): – A sum of €50 million from the French Development Agency (AFD) has been allocated as part of the ‘Sustainable City’ programme for the period 2025–2028 to support Boma’s urban transformation in Kongo Central province in the south-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a document received on Tuesday by CPA.
“With total funding of €50 million from the ‘AFD’, of which €10 million implemented by Expertise France and €40 million implemented by the National Agency for Spatial Planning (ANAT), the Sustainable City programme runs from 2025 to 2028 for its Expertise France phase. It aims to support Boma in its urban transformation and contributes to make Boma a model capable of inspiring other secondary towns,” it is read in the AFD Group’s document. “On the occasion of the World Resident Day, the initiatives carried out as part of the ‘Sustainable City’ programme’ in Boma show that improving living conditions in cities is not just about building infrastructure. It is also about better spatial planning, strengthening public services, anticipating climate risks and giving residents a say in the decisions that shape their living environment,” has added the source.
According to the source, the aim of the ‘Sustainable City of Boma’ project is to establish a coherent, long-term vision for the city’s development, with the ambition of drawing up several urban planning tools, notably the Local Land-Use Plan (PLAT), the Urban Master Plan (PDU) and the Solid Waste Management Master Plan (SDGDS). These tools, has indicated the AFD Group, are intended to enable better organisation of land use and development, to anticipate the risks of erosion and flooding, to improve mobility and transport, to strengthen waste management and to guide future urban investment. According to the source, the challenge is to build a city capable of supporting its growth whilst ensuring services and infrastructure tailored to the needs of its residents. CPA/
