DRC passes the 1,000-death mark for Ebola

Kinshasa, July 23rd, 2026 (CPA).- The Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed the 1,000-death mark for Ebola virus disease (EVD) since the outbreak was declared on May 15th, according to a report by the Ministry in charge of Health on the epidemiological situation of the disease, consulted on Thursday by CPA.

“The key epidemiological indicators show that there have been 2,535 confirmed cases, including 1,033 deaths; 738 people are in isolation; 506 have recovered; the overall case fatality rate is 40.7 per cent; and the contact tracing rate stands at 77.2 per cent,” it is read.  According to the source, 42 health zones are affected across five provinces, namely Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu, Ituri, Tshopo and Haut-Uele. The Ituri province remains the main hotspot for transmission, accounting for 88.6 per cent of cumulative cases and 73 per cent of new infections recorded during the day.

Furthermore, the report from the Emergency Operations Centre for Patient Care (COUSP) notes that Nord-Kivu has the highest case fatality rate, estimated at 58.7 per cent. The source has also emphasised that contact tracing remains below the set targets, with a national rate of 77.2 per cent – an indicator still considered insufficient to effectively break the chains of transmission.
