Kinshasa, June 8th, 2026 (CPA).- A sit-in protest against the lack of public lighting on several roads in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), was organized on Monday by a coalition of civil society organizations in front of City Hall, the seat of the provincial institutions, according to a statement consulted by CPA.
“Today, the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for the Monitoring of Reforms and Public Action (Corap) joined the Congolese Standing Citizens’ Movement (MCDC) in a citizens’ sit-in organized in front of Kinshasa City Hall to draw the authorities’ attention to the issue of public lighting. This action fully aligns with the objectives of the ToBoyiMolili campaign, which emphasizes that access to electricity is not only about households but also concerns citizens’ security, urban mobility and the quality of life in our cities,” the statement read. As part of this citizens’ campaign, the source added, Corap and its member organizations are continuing their mobilization efforts to highlight the daily realities faced by residents due to repeated power outages in Kinshasa.
Beyond raising awareness, the campaign aims to document the social, economic and security impacts of the lack of reliable electricity access while encouraging citizens to make their voices heard and calling on the authorities and stakeholders in the energy sector to assume their responsibilities. Implemented in several municipalities of Kinshasa through more than fifteen member organizations of the coalition, the campaign includes various field activities such as citizens’ surveys, roundtable discussions, public forums and citizens’ sit-ins. The source also indicated that, alongside field activities, a social media campaign is being conducted to encourage citizens to share their experiences, challenge the relevant authorities and demand sustainable solutions to improve access to electricity.
“The objective is to contribute to improving access to electricity in the DRC, promote better governance in the energy sector and encourage the implementation of concrete solutions that meet the needs of the population,” the source concluded.
