DRC: Respect for human rights recommended to ensure sustainability of the mining sector

Kinshasa, June 18th, 2026 (CPA).- Respect for human rights has been recommended as an essential condition for the sustainability of the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), during a panel discussion on artisanal mining held as part of DRC Mining Week 2026, according to the X account of a United Nations institution consulted by ACP on Thursday. “A strong message emerged from this discussion: for the mining sector to be sustainable, it must guarantee respect for human rights at every stage,” the X account of the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) stated. “Today, artisanal mining plays a vital role in the economy, but it is also accompanied by major human rights challenges, including difficult working conditions, child labour, land-related conflicts and the vulnerability of local communities,” the source added.

The same source indicated that “the UNJHRO, together with the United Nations in the DRC, promotes a preventive approach, particularly through human rights impact assessments. This tool makes it possible to anticipate risks, protect communities and prevent conflicts.” The United Nations institution also emphasized that transforming the mining sector requires the commitment of all stakeholders, including public authorities, companies, communities and development partners.

It concluded by reaffirming its commitment to promoting a mining sector that is fairer, safer and more sustainable.

It should be recalled that the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) is the principal United Nations human rights institution operating in the DRC. It documents human rights violations, assists victims and advises national authorities in their efforts to combat impunity.
