DRC: Special electricity system deployed during the World Cup (Hydraulic Resources Minister)

Kinshasa, June 14th, 2026 (CPA). – A special electricity supply system has been deployed by the National Electricity Company Société Nationale d’Électricité (SNEL) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to ensure continuous power supply during the FIFA World Cup, according to the Minister of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity during the 92nd Council of Ministers meeting held on Friday. According to government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya, “the Minister of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity informed the Council that a special operating directive for the distribution network in Kinshasa and in all provinces supplied by SNEL has been put in place to guarantee continuous electricity supply during the World Cup.”

He explained that the mechanism aims to harmonize operations among teams responsible for network exploitation and monitoring, ensuring a unified understanding of system configuration, available power sources, backup circuits, and technical procedures to be implemented in case of disruptions.

He further noted that the system will allow continuous monitoring of executed actions, identification of pending interventions, and better mitigation of technical constraints that could affect electricity stability during the period. Government support has also been requested to ensure effective implementation of these measures, with the goal of sustainably meeting the energy needs of the population and economic operators. The qualification of the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the World Cup represents one of the country’s most significant sporting achievements in decades, marking a historic return to the global stage after 52 years of absence.
