DRC: The fight against food shortages, a priority program for the Governor of Kasai Oriental

Kinshasa, December 17th, 2025 (CPA).- The fight against food shortages in Kasai Oriental, in the center of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was presented as a ‘priority program’ for the governor of this province during an interview on Wednesday in Kinshasa.   ‘Agencies are working on techniques and strategies to be implemented to combat food shortages in our country, particularly in the province of Kasai Oriental. This is my primary program: to combat food shortages,’ said Jean-Paul Mbwebwe, Governor of Kasai Oriental province. Shortly before returning to Mbuji-Mayi, the capital of the province he governs, he said that a management policy had been put in place to work with farmers’ organizations and support farmers in various areas. During his stay in the capital, Governor Mbwebwe said he had participated in workshops related to this field of activity, as well as on reforestation and deforestation control policy.

Speaking about the progress of the local development program for the 145 territories (PDL-145 T), the head of the East Kasai provincial executive also stressed that ‘this is not a completely finished program’. « The PDL-145T is, of course, not a completely finished program. There are still some projects that have not yet been completed. There are health centers that have not yet been built, and some schools in certain territories. Recently, an advisor to the Head of State came to assess the situation. He also realized this. (…) But we have not yet reached the threshold that had been set, » the governor said.  The governor of Kasai Oriental province returned to the city of Mbuji-Mayi after an official mission to Kinshasa, in connection with the Head of State’s State of the Nation address, delivered on 8 December 2025 before both houses of Parliament meeting in Congress at the People’s Palace.
