Isiro, September 3rd, 2026 (CPA).- The rise in prices of hand sanitizer and other supplies used in the response to Ebola in Isiro, Haut-Uele province, in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has been deemed excessive by the deputy mayor, who has condemned this practice on Thursday following an inspection tour.
“It is inconceivable that a small 100 ml bottle of hand sanitizer, which sold for FC 3,000 before the epidemic, is now being sold for FC 7,000. The small basin, which used to cost FC 2,000, has risen to FC 6,000, whilst the bucket, which used to sell for FC 3,000, now costs FC 8,000. This sort of behavior is unacceptable and we cannot tolerate it,” has declared Ms.
Charlotte Nesamoa. According to the deputy mayor of Isiro, some business operators are taking advantage of the current health situation to significantly increase the prices of these essential products for disease prevention, a practice she describes as unacceptable. She has announced that an emergency meeting would soon be held with the various chambers of commerce to find solutions to this situation and put an end to the soaring prices of products needed for the response.
“I would like to announce that an emergency meeting will be held in the very near future with all the chambers of commerce. This should enable us to put an end to this situation. Ebola cannot be a source of enrichment for some and impoverishment for others,” she has added. This declaration has been made on Thursday in Isiro during an awareness-raising meeting on the Ebola response, organised for the city’s school heads in the main meeting room of the governor’s residence, in the presence of Deputy Governor Christophe Dara.
