Bunia, September 6th, 2026 (CPA) – Two hundred and twenty-six (226) confirmed cases of Ebola, including 120 deaths, have been reported since the start of the outbreak in the Lita health zone, located in Djugu territory, in Ituri, in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the head of this health authority has indicated CPA on Sunday.
“To date, we have 226 confirmed cases, including 120 deaths, representing a case fatality rate of 53.1 per cent. On average, we are seeing around three to four cases a day at the Ebola treatment centre,” has indicated Dr Patience-Pacifique Lokengama, chief medical doctor for the Lita health zone. She has reassured that, in addition to caring for patients, the response team continues to monitor the situation within the community and to step up infection prevention and control activities.
Dr Lokengama has emphasised that health teams are focusing in particular on ensuring prompt access to care, which is considered a key factor in improving the chances of recovery for those infected. She has maintained that the community awareness-raising therefore remains a priority in her health zone, which is grappling with the effects of fear and misinformation linked to this outbreak.
