Ituri: Transfer of convicts, a necessary measure to relieve overcrowding in Bunia prison

Bunia, July 15th, 2025 (CPA) – The transfer of prisoners from the central prison of Bunia, main town of Ituri province in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, to other penitentiary establishments has been proposed as one of the measures needed to relieve the overcrowding in this prison, CPA has learned on Tuesday from an administrative source.

‘If the detainees are those sentenced to heavy sentences by the military courts, they should be sent to Angenga [Grande Equateur]. As for the civil courts, those sentenced to heavy sentences could be transferred to the high-security prison in Osio [Tshopo],’ has declared Lieutenant-Colonel Camille Zonzi, Director of Bunia Central Prison.  He has said that there are at least 502 convicts in this prison and if some of them are transferred, logically the number will decrease. Lieutenant-Colonel Camille Zonzi has urged young people in particular to live in fear of the law so as to avoid suffering the same fate as their peers, who range in age from 32 to 45.  CPA/
