Kinshasa: decrease of 7.41% in the price of a box of fish at the market

Kinshasa, May 28th, 2026 (CPA).– A decrease of 7.41% in the price of a box of fish commonly known as ‘Malangwa ’ (pangas), has been observed on the market in Kinshasa (capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo), falling from FC 54,000 to FC 50,000 during the period from April 28th to May 28th, CPA has noticed during a mini-survey. “A 10-kilogramme carton of frozen ‘Malangwa’ fish is currently selling for 50,000 Congolese francs (FC), thus around 22 US dollars. Last month, the price was set at FC 54,000,” has declared Chantal Mutombo, a vendor at the Marché de la Liberte (Liberty Market).

She has explained that this drop is mainly due to the stability of the Congolese franc against the US dollar, as well as the regular supply of imported products to cold stores. According to information gathered at the markets in Masina, Matete and Gambela, the price per kilogramme varies between FC 6,500 and FC 9,250, depending on the point of sale and the quality of the product.

The ‘Malangwa’, known as pangas, is an imported fish much appreciated by households in Kinshasa due to its relatively affordable cost compared to other types of fish or meat. It is also an important source of protein for many families in the capital. This fall in prices is seen as a relief for many consumers who, in recent months, have faced a general rise in food prices in Kinshasa’s markets.
