Kinshasa, September 18th, 2025 (CPA).- Rehabilitation work on a 200-metre section of the Matadi road between Okito and Molwa avenues in Ngaliema, a municipality in western Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is at the stage of stripping the road surface, according to information obtained on Thursday from administrative sources. « Since early September, we have begun rehabilitation work on a 200-metre section of the Matadi road, between Okito Avenue towards the triangle and Molwa Avenue in the Delvaux neighbourhood. The project is still in its early stages, and we are currently at the stage of stripping the road surface (removing a layer of unwanted material), » has declared engineer Dan Mafeve of the Congolese Public Works Agency, who is coordinating the project.
According to Mr Mafeve, this work has been launched to improve the condition of the road and facilitate water drainage through the installation of gutters. He has explained that a large portion of the top layer of the old road surface has already been removed on the section concerned and that workers are filling the ground with stones and gravel, a preparatory step for laying the final surface.
This initiative has been welcomed by the inhabitants of the area, despite the temporary inconvenience it has caused to traffic, which remains disrupted on this busy road, with a noticeable slowdown for motorists who are forced to use a single lane in both directions. ‘This project is a good thing because since last year this road has been almost impassable during the rainy season with stagnant and foul-smelling water.
We hope that with the completion of this work we will be spared this inconvenience’ has specified Gedeon Mayala, an official from the Delvaux neighbourhood population service.
This project is part of a road infrastructure modernisation programme that has been long awaited by residents of the neighbourhood, who have long complained about the dilapidated state of this section of the road and the air pollution caused by the foul odour emanating from the rubbish dumped there near the Maternity bus stop.
