Kinshasa: The Renovation of Avenues in a Municipality Praised by a Former Provincial Official

Kinshasa, July 27th  , 2026 (CPA).- The rehabilitation of the main avenues in the municipality of Matete (in the center of the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo) was praised on Monday by an honorary representative of the city-province of Kinshasa, who has bitter memories of their advanced state of disrepair prior to their current modernization, the CPA has learned during an interview.

“I am pleased with the smooth progress of the rehabilitation work on certain major thoroughfares in the Matete commune, which were in a state of advanced disrepair and now have a fresh new look. Through this work, I congratulate the government of the Republic for seeking to restore the image of our municipality,” has said Ms. Mbuyi Tshiteya, honorary provincial deputy. According to Ms. Mbuyi, it has been 20 years since the municipality of Matete benefited from road rehabilitation and the construction of the Kiyimbi Bridge, which connects it to the municipality of Lemba. Over the years, small businesses have encroached on the rehabilitated roads, and the drainage channels and gutters have become clogged with piles of trash, thereby contributing to flooding.

“I would like to thank the National Service brigade, which is already doing a good job of disciplining the population, maintaining public order, and enforcing the law,” she has said.

Small shops and outdoor seating areas used to clutter the newly rehabilitated roads; vendors who also took the liberty of setting up their stalls on the sidewalks—completely indifferent to the inconvenience caused to passersby—will no longer reappear.

Progress of the Work

However, Ms. Mbuyi noted that some streets have already been rehabilitated, while others are currently undergoing rehabilitation.  Along the Viaza, Mai-Ndombe, Baboma, Tomba, and Lokele routes, the work has involved repairing the road surface and gutters to improve traffic flow on Kiyimbi Avenue, pouring concrete for the wearing course, installing curbs, building sidewalks, and cleaning out the gutters.

The roads currently undergoing rehabilitation are those passing through the Mutoto, Bahumbu, Mpudi, and Market neighborhoods, as well as the road leading to Kisenso from the Kinsaku roundabout. Another section under rehabilitation runs alongside the former City-Train warehouse (currently owned by Bralima), passing through the Matete train station. Among the companies playing a leading role in the construction of these projects is Taho, which has continuously pre-financed numerous construction sites. The rehabilitation of the roads in the municipality of Matete is central to several economic issues. The municipality of Matete, located in the center of the Mont-Amba district, plays an important role in the capital’s commerce and transportation, as it is home to a large urban market that is among the busiest in Kinshasa.
