Kinshasa Trade Fair Edition: The Insurance Sector Presented as a Tool for Economic Resilience (Sonas)

Kinshasa, August 30th, 2026 (CPA).-The subscription to insurance has been presented by the National Insurance Company (Sonas) as a tool for economic resilience for businesses and households, on Saturday in Kinshasa (capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo), during a conference and debate organized on the fringes of the 48th edition of the Congo-Kinshasa International Fair (Fickin). “The insurance is a tool for economic resilience for businesses and households,” has declared Clement-Desire Kabongo, General Director-of Sonas. To back up his remarks, he has outlined the history of insurance, its various categories and its role in a nation’s economic life, particularly in DRC. Mr. Kabongo has explained that the insurance constitutes a protective mechanism enabling businesses and households to better cope with the various risks likely to affect their activities, assets and incomes. “You cannot establish economic liberalism in the Constitution and then operate a monopoly in practice,” he has argued, maintaining that opening the sector to competition enables the principles of economic liberalism established in the Constitution to be realized. In his view, this liberalization also presents an opportunity for Sonas to consolidate and increase its market share, in an environment marked by the arrival of new operators. Mr Kabongo has also called for a better understanding of the legal provisions governing industrial relations, particularly regarding length of service, workers’ rights and justification for delays. Held under the theme: ‘Insurance as a tool for economic resilience for businesses and households’, this symposium has brought together, amongst others, executives and staff from this insurance company, as well as representatives from public institutions and enterprises. Opened on August 15th, this 48th edition of the trade fair plays a vital role in highlighting the country’s potential and promoting local products made in DRC.
