Kisangani: a military prosecutor’s office ordered to investigate an altercation at a residence

‎

Kinshasa, September 8th, 2026 (CPA).- The head of the Senior Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Military Court of Kisangani, the provincial capital of Tshopo in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has been ordered by the Minister in charge of Justice to investigate an altercation involving a prosecutor, according to a letter received on Tuesday by CPA. “Consequently, by virtue of the power of injunction conferred upon me by Article 70 of the Organic Law (…) on the organisation, functioning and jurisdiction of the courts, I hereby order you to initiate, without delay, a judicial investigation for the purpose of establishing the facts, determining the circumstances and, where applicable, the responsibilities that may arise therefrom”, it is read in this correspondence signed by Guillaume Ngefa, Minister in charge of Justice and Keeper of the Seals. According to this same source, officers from the Congolese National Police (PNC) allegedly intervened on the instructions of a Senior Commissioner, on the grounds that the residence of the prosecutor at the Makiso Magistrates’ Court was situated on public land, adding that the prosecutor had subsequently sought explanations before an altercation broke out, during which he was allegedly beaten and subjected to physical violence by police officers present at the scene. ‎Furthermore, this same source has reported that the Minister in charge of Justice is calling for those responsible to be identified and for all those involved – notably the officer who has ordered the intervention and the police officers concerned – to be subject to the necessary investigations. “Those subject to the investigations must include, in particular, the senior superintendent who is alleged to have ordered the intervention, as well as the police officers who have taken part in it, and in particular those who are alleged to have taken part in the altercation,” the source has concluded.
