Kongo Central: an escape attempt subdued at Mbanza-Ngungu Central Prison

Mbanza-Ngungu, March 29th, 2026 (CPA).- An escape attempt has been subdued on Saturday by the security personnel at Mbanza-Ngungu Central Prison in Kongo Central (south-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo), where inmates were protesting against several cases of cholera, some of which were fatal, CPA has learnt from administrative sources. “There has been no major incident. However, the problem lies in the recorded cases of cholera, which have developed within the prison,” has declared Salomon Mudekoko, assistant territorial administrator of Mbanza-Ngungu. According to him, this attempt has occurred after the death of an inmate, which has caused a feeling of abandonment. “However, yesterday the prison has been disinfected and today it was planned to transfer the most urgent cases to the Nsona-Nkulu General Reference Hospital for appropriate care,” he has added. The local authority who has gone to the prison has praised the work done by the security service, which has subdued the situation. He has reassured that a medical team is expected to examine all the inmates and that serious cases will be transferred to hospital, whilst less severe cases will be treated on site. Gunshots have been heard during the escape attempt, following which security measures have been reinforced around the prison. ACP/
