Gungu, September 3rd, 2026 (CPA) – The administrative building of the Higher Institute of Education (ISP) in Gungu, a territory in Kwilu Province in the south-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has been damaged by torrential rain, CPA has learnt on Thursday from an academic source.
“The torrential rain that fell in our rural municipality of Mukedi has caused significant material damage and human suffering. This disaster has not spared our alma mater, the Higher Institute of Education (ISP), where the roof of the administrative building has been severely damaged, and another large two-winged building has had its roof blown off by the wind,” has said Jean Claude Gitambala, the ISP’s administrative general secretary. “In addition to the ISP, several roofs of private homes in the municipality have been visited by this violent wind, which has carried away roofing, as well as a local secondary school (the Ndunda Institute), which has lost many administrative documents and school textbooks,” he has added. Mr. Gitambala has continued that three people have been struck by lightning during this rain, specifying that they have escaped with injuries. Since the start of the rainy season, several cases of lightning strikes have been recorded, often proving fatal. CPA/
