Maniema: Two dead and several houses destroyed in Kasongo

Kasongo, October 13th, 2026 (CPA).-Two people were killed and several houses destroyed following torrential rain that fell in the Kasongo territory, Maniema province, in the centre-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the CPA learnt on Tuesday from community sources.

“This torrential rain, accompanied by strong winds, which lashed the town of Kasongo from 5.00 pm until the early hours of the morning, caused significant material damage and loss of life. The provisional toll stands at two deaths, including an 8-year-old child swept away by the floodwaters, as well as more than 200 collapsed houses and several seriously injured people. Several families have been left homeless and are spending the night under the open sky,” has said Baby Ndombe, vice-president of the Kasongo civil society group ‘Force Vive’.“The worst-affected areas include the Tchatcha and TSF neighbourhoods, where the roofs of several schools and churches have been swept away and walls have collapsed,” he has added.

It is against this backdrop that the local authority has appealed for urgent humanitarian aid to the provincial government, humanitarian organisations and people of goodwill, given that those affected lack shelter, food and medicines.
