Price drop of 28.5% of tomatoes at commercial markets in Lubumbashi

Lubumbashi, July 21st, 2026 (CPA). – A price drop of 28.5% of tomatoes has been observed in the markets of Lubumbashi, the chief town of Haut-Katanga province (in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo), with the price of a crate falling from FC 35,000 to FC 25,000, CPA has noticed on Tuesday during a brief market tour. “Two weeks ago, a crate of tomatoes that was selling between FC 35,000 and FC 40,000 is now selling for FC 25,000,” has declared Jean-Pierre Ilunga, a seller of staple foodstuffs. Mr Ilunga has also indicated that, in addition to tomatoes, a 25 kg sack of onions, which was selling for 45,000 FC a week ago, is currently trading at FC 30,000. According to him, this fall is mainly due to the abundance of supply on the market, resulting from the peak harvest season in the peripheral production areas around Lubumbashi.
