Role of the media in peace building discussed in Kinshasa

Kinshasa, June 24th, 2026 (CPA).- The role of the media in peace building was highlighted during a restitution workshop on “Media Lab: Inclusive Journalism as a Driver of Peace and Stabilization,” organized on Wednesday in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). “The media play a fundamental role in preserving peace, social cohesion and strengthening democracy. In the current context, marked by persistent conflicts in the eastern part of the country and other regions, ongoing regional and international mediation efforts, and dialogue initiatives aimed at achieving peace, the media are called upon to fully assume their social responsibility,” said Elodie Ntamuzinda, a representative of civil society. She urged media professionals to become active partners in promoting peace, dialogue and social cohesion by embracing conflict-sensitive journalism grounded in ethics, responsibility, the search for truth and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.

According to the activist, peace is not built solely around negotiating tables; it is also built within minds, communities and the media that shape public opinion. “The media can either be instruments of division or tools for peace. Their responsibility is to choose the side of truth, human dignity and lasting peace,” she insisted. “The media must provide accurate and responsible information, promote a culture of dialogue, highlight peace initiatives and foster national unity,” she concluded. As an outcome of the meeting, a common roadmap will be drafted and adopted, incorporating concrete mechanisms for coordination, monitoring, accountability and advocacy aimed at strengthening women’s participation in peace processes. The event was organized by UN Women and MONUSCO, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Family and Children and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the theme “Women, Peace and Security: Towards a Common Agenda in the DRC,” as part of the celebration of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, observed annually on June 24th.
