Kinshasa, October 5th, 2026 (CPA).- Works to supply a water treatment plant intended to provide water to 1.5 million inhabitants of Kananga, capital of Kasaï-Central Province, central Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), have been launched by the Minister of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity, according to a statement consulted Monday by CPA.
“On Monday, October 5th, 2026, Aimé Sakombi, Minister in charge of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity and Personal Representative of the President of the Republic and Head of State, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, laid the foundation stone for the works aimed at supplying the city of Kananga with drinking water,” the statement said. “Ultimately, these facilities will increase the nominal production capacity to 125,000 cubic meters of water per day, with the ambition of serving nearly 1.5 million inhabitants,” the source added. According to the document, the overall investment amounts to approximately USD 164 million from the World Bank. The works notably include the construction of the new Lulua water treatment plant, the rehabilitation and expansion of the Kanyuka plant, as well as the reinforcement of the distribution network. This milestone translates into concrete action the Head of State’s vision of making the right of access to drinking water a tangible and sustainable reality for the Congolese population.
