Kinshasa, June 9th, 2026 (CPA).- The Electoral Commission of Zambia has announced on Tuesday the suspension, until further notice, of all political campaign activities in the Mazabuka Central constituency, citing a deterioration in the security situation ahead of the elections scheduled for August, international media have reported. “The decision to suspend all on-going election campaign activities has been taken in support of measures implemented by the police banning public gatherings in the Mazabuka Central constituency,” has declared Brown Kasaro, General Director of the Electoral Commission of Zambia. “The resumption of activities will depend on an improvement in the security situation, as confirmed by the security forces,” he has added.
This suspension comes in a climate of growing political tensions in several regions of the country. The Mazabuka constituency has recently witnessed clashes and acts of intimidation between supporters of rival political parties. Similar incidents have also been reported in Kabwe Central and Chawama, where violence has resulted in injuries and damage to property. The Electoral Commission has indicated that it is working in coordination with the security services to analyse these incidents and take the necessary measures in accordance with electoral legislation.
It has called on political parties, candidates and supporters to remain calm, to respect official guidelines and to promote non-violence during the election period. Finally, the Commission has reaffirmed that the smooth running of peaceful campaigns remains essential to guarantee the credibility and the integrity of the electoral process in Zambia.
