Pope Francois appoints Bishop Fulgence Muteba Metropolitan Archbishop of Lubumbashi

Kinshasa, May 23th, 2021 (CPA).- Pope Francois has appointed Bishop Fulgence Muteba Mugalu to the post of Metropolitan Archbishop of Lubumbashi, announced on Saturday the 2nd Deputy Secretary General of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO), l Father Georges Kalenga in a press release from the supreme body of the Catholic Church of the DRC reached the CPA. Bishop Fulgence Muteba, who has headed the diocese of Kilwa Kasenga in Haut-Katanga since 2005, received congratulations and best wishes from CENCO for his new mandate. A doctorate in practical theology from the University of Montreal in Canada, Bishop Muteba Mugalu, he was appointed secretary of CENCO and professor at the Catholic Faculties, now the Catholic University of the Congo (UCC). Then, he will be appointed bishop of the diocese of Kilwa Kasenga in 2005. He will now manage the archdiocese of Lubumbashi, inhabited by 1,406,000 Catholic faithful. The archdiocese of Lubumbashi, it is recalled, includes the cities of Lubumbashi, Likasi and the territory of Kambove in Haut-Katanga. Bishop Fulgence Muteba had as predecessors at the head of the Archdiocese of Lubumbashi, Bishop Jean Félix de Hemptinne (1910 to 1958), Bishop Joseph Floribert Cornelis (1958-1967), Bishop Eugène Kabanga Songasonga (1967-1998) and Bishop Jean -Pierre Tafunga from 2010.
