Ebola in Bunia: Sanctions demanded against those refusing to comply with preventive measures

Bunia, November 3rd, 2026 (CPA).- Residents of Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), on Tuesday called for the strict enforcement of the Governor’s order on compliance with Ebola preventive measures, demanding exemplary sanctions against those refusing to comply in order to curb the spread of the epidemic.

“We have noticed that many people are beginning to neglect preventive measures because they are seeing a decline in the number of cases.

Yet Ebola is still circulating in our province. The authorities must enforce the measures adopted and punish those who deliberately refuse to comply with them,” said Germain Unecan, a student at Shalom University of Bunia.

“We must not wait for infections to rise again before taking action. Some people are no longer observing preventive measures in public places. We urge the authorities to enforce the Governor’s order without leniency,” he added. “The decline in cases does not mean that the epidemic has been defeated.

It is precisely now that we must step up our vigilance to prevent another outbreak. Sanctions are necessary to hold accountable those who take prevention lightly,” said Claudette Mave, a teacher.

For his part, Jospin Kasereka, an economic operator, expressed the wish to see managers of markets, churches, schools and other public gathering places ensure strict compliance with these instructions.

“The fight against Ebola is a collective responsibility, and everyone must be aware of the danger,” he said.

These concerns arise amid a decline in new infections, which is encouraging a relaxation of preventive behaviour in certain parts of the city, particularly in markets, churches and public transport, it was noted. ACP/
