Civil society advocates for the establishment of a formal framework for exchange between stakeholders in the Grand Inga Project

Kinshasa, April 13th, 2021 (CPA) – Civil society organizations (CSO) working in the energy sector pleaded for the establishment, by the government, of a formal framework for exchanges between stakeholders to the Grand Inga Project, in a statement made public on Monday in Kinshasa.

This space for discussion, they stressed, will allow active participation of civil society and local communities in the process of implementing the Grand Inga Project. They recalled that it has been since 2013 that they have closely followed the energy sector of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), by advocating for the inclusive access of the Congolese populations to energy.

Based on the high cost of this project, CSO suggested the construction of a micro-power plant that will be a decentralized solution that can guarantee safer and healthier access to energy for all Congolese.

CSO also asked the government, in addition to the transparency and good governance of the project, to comply with the constitution and laws on Public Procurement, by publishing the various agreements signed on Inga 3 and Grand Inga, as well as the government policy document on the implementation of the Grand Inga Project; not to sign an agreement with harmful consequences for the environment in DRC and likely to increase the debt of future generations.

Civil society organizations also made recommendations to the President of the Republic, Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, asking him to take into account the demands of civil society by giving priority to decentralized and sustainable energy for all Congolese.

The statement of CSO reinforces its position each time expressed, on the evolution of the Grand Inga Project, with regard to taking into account the interests of the populations, local communities and the country in general, it is indicated. ACP /
