Signature in Kinshasa of the execution contract for the rehabilitation of the port of Kalemie

Kinshasa, April 3rd, 2021 (CPA) – The Fund for the Promotion of Industry and the Chinese company « Gezhuba international engineering » proceeded Thursday in Kinshasa, in the presence of the outgoing Minister of Industry, Julien Paluku Kahongya, to the signing of the contract for the rehabilitation and modernization of the port of Kalemie, in the province of Tanganyika for an amount estimated at 126,000,000 (one hundred and twenty-six million) USD, the CPA learned on Friday from the Ministry of Industry.

For outgoing Minister Julien Palulu Kahongya, the rehabilitation of this port will undoubtedly strengthen and promote connectivity between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), East and Southern Africa, adding that this contract is part of the program of the President of the Republic, Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, in its section relating to the connectivity of the provinces.

“Internally, the port of Kalemie will facilitate the reduction of the distance between the DRC and the port of Dar-es-lam. The rehabilitation of this port will have a major impact on the economy and will have an impact on the prices of the various products”, underlined Julien Paluku, before indicating that this structure will allow, in addition, the Katanga space, to open up. to nine other provinces, which will also allow thinking, in the future, of the construction of railways and the rehabilitation of roads in this region. He called on the signatory parties to take action as quickly as possible. “The Congolese should not ask us, in the coming days, where we are with the project. Let the work begin as urgently as possible, ”he insisted. The managing director of the FPI, Patrice Kitebi, for his part indicated that the arrangements contained in the contract, will create good conditions for the berthing of boats of more than 4,000 (four thousand) tons. In addition, he added, the signed contract includes projects with three main components namely, the rehabilitation of the port; the construction of the FPI headquarters as well as the relocation of the military port. For his part, Mr. Shi Guodong, commercial director of the group, « Gezhuba CGGINTL, promised while reassuring that his company, which has proven expertise in the construction of ports, will fulfill its part of the contract. CGGTINTL is a Chinese company that has proven its worth in the world with nearly 8,000 (eight thousand) structures, including the 3 gorges dam in Yangzi Jiang, located in the province of Hubei. Genzhuba is ranked among the top 5 Chinese companies in the fields of ports, airports and residential buildings.The outgoing Minister of Transport and Communications, Didier Mazenga, the Provincial Minister of Infrastructure and Public Works and ITPR Reconstruction of Tanganyika, officials of the Congo National Railway Company (SNCC) and some senior advisers to the Head of the State, attended the signing ceremony of the said contract. As a reminder, the port of Kalemie was built in 1931, it totals 90 (ninety) years to date and has only been rehabilitated once, in 1951.
