DRC: Lieutenant Colonel Mak Hakuzay appointed interim army spokesperson

Kinshasa, January 8th, 2026 (CPA).- Lieutenant Colonel Mak Hazukay has been appointed Commander of the Communication and Information Service of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Scifa), making him acting spokesperson for the army, according to a note received on Thursday by CPA. Lieutenant Colonel Hazukay will have to serve as interim replacement for Major General Sylvain Ekenge, who was suspended after making comments on state television, RTNC, that were deemed discriminatory towards women from a Congolese community. A graduate of the Faculty Institute of Information and Communication Sciences (Ifasic), Mak Hazukay has held the position of Director of Communication and Awareness and Spokesperson for the Sukola 1 operational sector in the Far North since May 2024. Responsible for communications for joint operations between the Congolese (FARDC) and Ugandan (UPDF) armies in 2008, Lieutenant-Colonel Hazukay was director of audio-visual communications in the information department of the FARDC General Staff. A former journalist, he has joined the army in 1998 and has underwent several military training courses in Morocco and China.
