Eastern Congo: Tshisekedi and Lourenço reaffirm their support for the Washington and Doha processes

Kinshasa, January 8th, 2026 (CPA). – The Congolese and Angolan presidents have reaffirmed on Thursday their support for the peace efforts linked to the Washington and Doha processes on the aggression against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during a meeting at the presidential palace in Cidade Alta in Luanda, according to the Congolese presidential press office. ‘The Presidents Felix Tshisekedi and João Lourenço, the later who is also the current chair of the African Union (AU), have taken this opportunity to reaffirm their support for the on-going peace efforts within the framework of the Washington and Doha processes,’ the source has indicated. The discussions between the two heads of state have focused on ‘reviewing on-going initiatives aimed at restoring lasting peace in eastern DRC, within the framework of the aforementioned processes,’ the source has added.

According to the Congolese Presidency, this working meeting is a continuation of the consultations engaged between the two Heads of State on the worrying security situation in the provinces of Nord-Kivu and Sud-Kivu, following the occupation of the town of Uvira by Rwandan troops and their auxiliaries from the M23/AFC coalition, according to the same source.  At their previous meeting on January 4th, President Tshisekedi has received a number of proposals from his counterpart that could lead to ‘real’ peace, which he had considered ‘very, very interesting.’
