Ebola in Bafwasende: 20-bed Ebola treatment center being set up (Chief Medical Officer)

Kisangani, October 5th, 2026 (CPA).- A 20-bed Ebola treatment center is currently being set up in Bafwasende Territory, Tshopo Province, northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Chief Medical Officer of the health zone told CPA on Monday during an interview. “The treatment center will have a capacity of 20 beds, including 12 reserved for confirmed cases, six for men and six for women, while eight beds will be allocated to suspected cases, four for men and four for women,” said Dr. Marcel Likilo, Chief Medical Officer of the Bafwasende Health Zone. He welcomed the progress of the process leading to the establishment of this new Ebola treatment center in the territory. “For the time being, the partner International Medical Corps (IMC) has already launched the recruitment process and candidates have submitted their applications. However, the actual construction work has not yet started,” he said. On the epidemiological front, the Bafwasende Health Zone still has eight confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease, including three deaths, according to data provided by the Chief Medical Officer.
