Kinshasa: Traffic police urged to enforce traffic regulations

Kinshasa, March 9th, 2026 (CPA). – The enforcement of traffic regulations among drivers was recommended to traffic police by the governor of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, during a parade organised on Monday at the Stadium of Martyrs, to improve traffic flow. « Traffic police remain at the forefront because it is their sovereign mission. Other services provide support.

The army is there to restore order and discipline. All road users must be required to comply with traffic regulations to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. Without this, it will be impossible to drive properly in Kinshasa, » has declared Daniel Bumba, Governor of Kinshasa. He has also recommended penalties for recalcitrant road users. ‘We must penalise all road users who drive in the wrong direction, those who create a second or third illegal lane on the road.

Everyone must obey traffic lights. Those who refuse to comply must be reprimanded and pay fines,’ he has insisted. According to the urban authority, if the vehicle is not in good condition, particularly if it lacks windows, sidelights or headlights, it must not be driven. « When faced with such a vehicle, there is no point in asking for the vehicle documents.

You cannot drive without a licence or insurance. Moreover, the money from these documents does not even go into the city’s coffers, » has declared the governor. According to him, the road compliance operation initiated in the Congolese capital is not aimed at generating revenue. It aims to ensure the smooth flow of traffic in order to restore order on the roads.

‘We want every road user to have the required documents before driving. It is not normal to drive on the road without complying with the required standards, including a driving licence and compliance with the Highway Code,’ has said the head of the city executive. The joint operation to enforce compliance with the Highway Code was launched on January 26th this year by the governor of Kinshasa during a ceremony at the Stadium of Martyrs. This operation focuses in particular on checking driving licences, technical inspections of vehicles, insurance documents, transport authorisations and compliance with official pricing.
