Over a million liters of water distributed to victims of the Nyiragongo volcano eruption in Goma

Goma, June 12th, 2021 (CPA).- The international movement of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IRCRCM), until last Sunday, provided support exceeding one million liters of water in favor of the victims of the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano, in particular the inhabitants of Munigi, Kanyaruchinya and Kibati, revealed the different structures of this organization, during a lively press conference Thursday, in the Red Cross room of Goma.

This organization, which revealed the various actions deployed in favor of people affected by the recent eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano, indicated that further west of Goma, in the cities of Sake, Shasha, Kirotshe in the territory of Masisi and in the city of Minova , in South Kivu, on the border with North Kivu, tens of thousands of displaced people have flocked since the day of the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano (May 22) while others have found asylum in many villages in the territory of Nyiragongo, located north of Goma.

According to her, more than 60,000 people benefit from water aid which will continue until the reestablishment of the REGIDESO network in the northern part of Goma as well as in the localities of the Nyiragongo territory on the border with the capital city. from the province of North Kivu.

« The eruption of May 22 considerably damaged the drinking water supply system for a large part of the city of Goma, » said Raphaël Renaud, head of the ICRC-Goma sub-delegation for whom despite the swift reaction of REGIDESO, a large part of the population is still without a water supply.

Faced with this vital need, said Raphaël Renaud, the ICRC with the DRC Red Cross organize daily the supply of several thousand people with drinking water, especially in Munigi where they have rehabilitated two reservoirs to prevent the population from traveling 7 km to ‘to the lake and another 7 km going up on the return path with several kilograms on your back.

The communities surrounding Goma and hospitals, he added, also benefit from water trucking.

Listening kiosks to locate lost children

The Red Cross and Red Crescent movement has also indicated that it has set up, during this period of crisis, kiosks for the benefit of people who have lost contact with members of their families in particular.

Several hundred children have been reunited with their families and in addition to other unaccompanied ones who have already been identified.

In times of humanitarian crisis such as that of the volcanic eruption, the ICRC advises parents to teach children the numbers of people they trust or write the phone numbers on a piece of paper to put in their pocket to make it easier to hand them over family.

In addition to the continuation of the care of gunshot wounds, support is still given to the care structures by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement which has been at all fronts with the evacuation of dead, carrying out burials, facilitating transport and psychosocial support.

The Red Cross is thus pleased with the rapid response provided to the population after the event.

This organization promises to focus on the most vulnerable populations and on the most pressing needs such as water, health, restoring family links. ACP/
