Kinshasa: Carbon market seen as an opportunity for development in DRC

Kinshasa, October 23rd, 2025 (CPA).–The carbon market was considered on Thursday in Kinshasa as an opportunity for the development of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during a forum on the theme: ‘Promoting innovation, investment and entrepreneurship in the clean energy sector in DRC’. ‘The ecological capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo offers major opportunities for sustainable development, particularly through the creation of a national carbon market,’ has said Jacques Moliba Bankanza, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Carbon Market Regulatory Authority.

He pointed out that DRC, with more than 150 million hectares of forest, is Africa’s largest carbon sink. This potential puts the country in a strategic position on the global climate stage. According to him, the establishment of a national carbon market would transform this natural capital into a real source of income for local communities, green businesses and the Congolese state. However, he insisted on the need to structure this market, ensure the traceability of carbon credits, and train Congolese youth to play an active role in this dynamic. ‘We are at a turning point where ecology and economics converge. It is time for the DRC to take full advantage of its natural assets to build a green and resilient economy,’ he concluded. This forum is part of the national drive to promote sustainable development and combat climate change, in line with the DRC’s international commitments.
