Kinshasa: Local elected officials call for their involvement in the success of urban policies

Kinshasa, September 17th, 2025 (CPA).- Local elected officials from the city of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, have asked the Minister Delegate for Urban Planning and Housing to involve them in ensuring the success of urban policies, according to a statement seen by the CPA on Wednesday.

« During our meeting, we have discussed with the Minister Delegate for Urban Planning and Housing, Angel Bangaza, the importance of establishing closer collaboration between municipal councillors and the ministry. As local elected officials, we are the first point of contact for the population, and we are convinced that our involvement is crucial to ensuring the success of policies related to urban planning, housing and the development of our cities, » read in the document signed by Luiguy Iyeli, reporter for the Lingwala Municipal Council.

‘This strategic session, marked by collaboration and “service to the Republic”, marked a turning point in urban policy management. Its aim was to strengthen coordination between the central government and municipal authorities in order to respond more effectively and concertedly to the complex challenges posed by the rapid and often disorderly urbanisation of Congolese cities,’ he added. At the heart of the discussions, the document has indicated that Minister Angel Bangaza shared her political vision centred on the renovation and modernisation of cities.

This ambition also aims to lay the foundations for sound and sustainable urban governance. According to the same document, Ms Bangaza emphasised the importance of a participatory approach, where the population is not only the beneficiary but also an essential actor in the implementation of programmes. It is in this spirit that local elected officials were called upon to play a leading role in raising awareness and engaging their communities. « The discussions have allowed to identify immediate priorities and strategies to be adopted. Among the key topics discussed was housing regulation, a major issue in controlling urban expansion and ensuring decent living conditions. This highlights the pivotal role of local elected officials, who serve as a bridge between government policy and the realities on the ground, » has continued the reporter of the Lingwala Municipal Council.

Mr Iyeli said that this dynamic of consultation and shared responsibility is considered essential to ensure that the ministry’s initiatives meet the real, everyday needs of citizens. « This working meeting is an important step towards concerted and participatory urban governance in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It reflects a shared commitment by political authorities and local elected officials to work towards inclusive and sustainable urban development. The initiative aims not only to improve the living environment in Congolese cities, but also to strengthen citizen participation and lay the groundwork for more transparent and equitable urban management, » he has concluded.
