National Electricity Company: 134 MW announced to reduce energy deficit

Kinshasa, October 1st, 2026 (CPA).- A projection of 134 megawatts (MW) aimed at reducing the energy deficit was announced in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), by the National Electricity Company (SNEL), following a meeting with its partner Karpowership, CPA learned Thursday from an administrative source.“They have power-generating ships that will be installed in Matadi and will initially inject 134 MW, which will help ease the energy deficit,” said Teddy Lwamba, Director General of SNEL. According to the SNEL Director General, the partnership with Karpowership will also enable SNEL to diversify its electricity generation sources as part of an approach geared toward an energy mix. “For a long time, we relied solely on hydropower; today, we are turning to new sources,” he added. He said the cooperation would also provide a generation solution that could be deployed rapidly. “Karpowership is currently facilitating our access to a generation solution with a certain degree of speed. It will therefore be deployed in less than a month, and this is a first,” he explained. The initiative is therefore expected to help reduce the energy deficit through the addition of 134 MW from a new generation source, while paving the way for improved electricity supply and better service to subscribers.
